This presentation further highlighted HealthyCloud’s commitment to advancing digital health and open science initiatives2. Furthermore, the timeline of the public release of the Strategic Agenda was shared with attendees.

Workshop: Elements of Secure Processing Environments

The EOSC-Life Annual General Meeting also featured a crucial workshop held on the 19th and 20th of June 2023, both in Brussels and online. This workshop was a collaborative initiative from various EU projects, including HealthyCloud, B1MG, PHIRI, HRIC, EOSC-Life, EUCAIM, among others. These projects, which consist of BioMedical Science Research Infrastructures (BMS RIs) and other consortium partners, focus on providing recommendations to policy makers to shape the future data landscape in the field of health research. The European Commission, led by DG Sante, is concurrently building a European Health Data Space with numerous implications for research and projects such as EHDS2-pilot.

The workshop centered on the concept of a “Secure Processing Environment” (SPE). This term refers to a physical or virtual environment, along with organizational means, that enables data reuse in a way that allows the operator to supervise all data processing actions. This includes display, storage, download, export of data, and calculation of derivative data through computational algorithms.

The workshop aimed to present existing SPEs as best practices and to discuss the basic technical and organizational requirements to build an SPE, particularly in compliance with the GDA and the EHDS. This discussion revolved around several key questions related to technical and organizational measures on TREs/SPEs, certifications used to demonstrate compliance, and the approval mechanisms in different countries.
